You will need to register for VAT If your taxable turnover for the previous 12 months is over the VAT threshold, however, you can register for VAT even if you have not reached this limit.
There are various VAT schemes available to help the smaller business:
- Cash Accounting - VAT is calculated on the basis of cash received and paid as opposed to invoice date.
- Annual Accounting - VAT is paid on account throughout the year in nine monthly instalments. You submit one VAT return at the end of the year together with a balancing payment.
- Flat Rate Scheme - VAT is calculated as a set percentage of your VAT inclusive turnover. The percentage rate used depends on your business sector.
